Memorial Day Weekend is the perfect time to kick off summer in beautiful Mitchell County, where mountain music, local traditions, outdoor adventures, and small-town charm come together. Whether you’re looking for family fun, live music, scenic drives, or unique Appalachian experiences, there’s something happening all weekend long across Bakersville, Spruce Pine, and Little Switzerland.

Saturday Adventures in Mitchell County
Start your Saturday morning by giving back to the community during the Bakersville Creekwalk Cleanup at 9:30 AM. It’s a great opportunity to help keep one of Mitchell County’s most scenic downtown spaces beautiful while connecting with locals and visitors.
After a morning outdoors, spend the afternoon exploring the mountains. Take a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, stop by local galleries and shops, or discover the rich mining history of the region at Emerald Village near Little Switzerland. This unique attraction features real mines, gemstone mining, museums, and special underground experiences. Their popular blacklight mine tours offer an unforgettable look at glowing minerals deep underground happening at 9:15PM That night. (Emerald Village)
As the sun sets, Memorial Day Weekend comes alive with music across Mitchell County. Enjoy an evening of live music in downtown Spruce Pine, grab dinner and drinks at the classic mountain favorite City Drive-In, or the brand new Spruce Pint Tap Room. Even head up the mountain to Switzerland Cafe & General Store in Little Switzerland for food and live entertainment. Our favorite? The Trout BLT!

Sunday in the Mountains
Sunday offers a slower pace filled with Appalachian tradition and family fun. Spend the afternoon at The Orchard at Altapass for their beloved Gospel Hymn gathering. Located directly off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Orchard is known for preserving mountain heritage through music, storytelling, apples, and breathtaking views.
Families can also enjoy a gem hunt at the Little Switzerland Orchard & Winery, adding a little treasure-hunting adventure to the holiday weekend. Between the mountain scenery, cool temperatures, and welcoming small towns, it’s the perfect way to celebrate Memorial Day in Western North Carolina.
