For 50 years, art has been more than something created in the Toe River Valley. It has been part of our identity, our heritage, and the stories that make our mountain communities unique. In 2026, Toe River Arts is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of connecting artists, art lovers, and communities throughout Mitchell and Yancey counties. What began as a small, grassroots effort has grown into an incredible creative community that supports more than 1,500 artists and performers through galleries, educational opportunities, exhibitions, and events. From pottery and glasswork to jewelry, textiles, painting, and sculpture, the Toe River Valley has become a destination for those who appreciate handmade craftsmanship and the people behind it.

And what better way to celebrate 50 years of creativity than by experiencing it firsthand?

Take Part in the Toe River Arts Studio Tour

One of the best ways to support our local arts community is to get out and explore during the biannual Toe River Arts Studio Tour, happening November 13–15, 2026.

This free, self-guided experience invites visitors to travel throughout Mitchell and Yancey counties, stepping inside working artist studios and galleries to meet the makers, see their creative spaces, and discover the inspiration behind their work.

This year's fall tour features more than 75 artists and 13 galleries, offering an opportunity to experience everything from beautifully crafted pottery and hand-blown glass to unique jewelry, paintings, textiles, and more.

There is something special about meeting the artist who created a piece, hearing the story behind it, and seeing the process that transforms an idea into something you can take home. Whether you're a seasoned art collector, searching for a one-of-a-kind holiday gift, or simply looking for a memorable way to spend a fall weekend in the mountains, the Studio Tour offers something for everyone.

Celebrate 50 Years of Art in the Toe River Valley

Fifty years is an incredible milestone, and Toe River Arts has helped shape the cultural identity of our region in ways that reach far beyond the gallery walls. At Discover Mitchell, we believe our artists are an essential part of what makes Mitchell County a special place to visit, live, and create. Their work tells the story of our mountains, our people, and our Appalachian heritage. So, mark your calendar, grab a friend, and spend November 13–15 exploring the Toe River Valley. Meet the artists, discover something new, and take home a little piece of the mountains.

Because the best way to celebrate 50 years of art is to keep supporting the people who make it.
