Accessible Outdoor Experiences in Mitchell County

In Mitchell County, the outdoors is for everyone. While much of our landscape is defined by rugged peaks and backcountry trails, we also recognize the importance of creating spaces that are welcoming and accessible to all visitors.

At this time, Mitchell County offers two greenway-style walking areas designed with accessibility in mind. These spaces provide gentle terrain, paved or compacted surfaces, and easy access to some of our most beautiful natural settings—especially along the North Toe River in Spruce Pine and Cane Creek in Bakersville.

Current Trail Status

Due to impacts from Hurricane Helene, both of Mitchell County’s ADA-accessible greenways are currently closed as repairs and restoration efforts begin. Similar to other Western North Carolina communities, storm damage has affected river access points, trail surfaces, and surrounding infrastructure, requiring careful and intentional rebuilding.

We know these spaces are important—not just for recreation, but for connection, wellness, and community—and we are committed to bringing them back stronger than before.

Looking Ahead

As renovations begin, this page will serve as your go-to resource for updates on reopening timelines, improvements, and new opportunities for accessible outdoor recreation in Mitchell County. Our long-term vision is to expand inclusive outdoor experiences so that everyone—regardless of ability—can enjoy the beauty of our mountains.

In the Meantime

While accessible greenways are temporarily unavailable, visitors can still enjoy scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway, peaceful overlooks, and community spaces throughout the county.
