Something strange is happening in the mountains of Spruce Pine — and thousands of visitors are flocking to experience it for themselves. The annual Spruce Pine Alien Festival has quickly become one of the most unique and talked-about events in the Southeast, transforming downtown into an out-of-this-world celebration of UFOs, extraterrestrials, live music, art, food, and mountain mystery.
Held each June along Oak Avenue (Upper Street) in downtown Spruce Pine, the free festival draws more than 50,000 attendees from across the country. What began as a quirky local gathering has exploded into North Carolina’s largest alien and UFO-themed festival, blending Appalachian folklore with cosmic curiosity in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Why Spruce Pine?
Believe it or not, Mitchell County has long been associated with UFO sightings and unexplained phenomena. Festival organizers say the county reports more UFO sightings than anywhere else in North Carolina. Add in the nearby Brown Mountain Lights, dark mountain skies, and the region’s connection to the quartz used in NASA technology and space telescopes, and suddenly the alien theme doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
The festival leans fully into that mystery with alien decorations lining downtown streets, costumed visitors roaming through the crowd, and vendors selling everything from handcrafted UFO art to cosmic crystals and extraterrestrial merchandise.

What You’ll Experience
The Spruce Pine Alien Festival is more than just a street festival — it’s a full-scale invasion of fun for all ages.
