A Mountain Tradition in Full BLOOM

There’s a moment each year when the mountains of Roan Mountain come alive in a way that feels almost unreal. Rolling hills turn shades of soft pink and vibrant magenta, cool mountain air carries the scent of summer, and visitors from across the region make their way to experience one of North Carolina’s most beloved traditions—the North Carolina Rhododendron Festival.

And while the blooms may still be a few weeks away, now is the perfect time to start planning your trip.

High above Mitchell County sits one of the most unique natural displays in the country—an expansive garden of Catawba rhododendrons that blanket the peaks of Roan Mountain Highlands. Each June, these blooms reach their peak, creating a landscape that feels more like a painting than real life.

But the beauty doesn’t stop at the view.

The festival itself, held in the charming mountain town of Bakersville, blends small-town hospitality with decades of tradition—bringing together music, crafts, food, and community in a way that feels both nostalgic and alive.

The North Carolina Rhododendron Festival is more than just a celebration of blooms—it’s a full weekend experience.

Visitors can look forward to:

  • Live music echoing through downtown

  • Local artisans showcasing handmade crafts

  • Food vendors serving up mountain favorites

  • And the beloved pageant, a long-standing tradition tied to the festival’s history

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning each year, there’s something about this weekend that keeps people coming back.

Here’s the thing about rhododendrons: they don’t wait.

Bloom timing depends on weather and elevation, and peak color can come and go quickly. That’s why planning ahead is key—not just for catching the blooms, but also for securing lodging and making the most of your trip.

A sunrise drive or early morning hike along the mountain can be one of the most memorable experiences of the entire season. Starting Mid-Late May, we will be highlight a bloom report every week so you can make the best plans!
