If you’re looking to trade crowded beaches and busy cities for fresh mountain air and meaningful moments, Mitchell County offers a spring break experience unlike anywhere else.
Here, the pace is slower, the views are bigger, and every day invites you to reconnect—with nature, with community, and with yourself. Whether you’re planning a long weekend or a full week away, this itinerary will help you experience the best of the mountains. If you have the luxury to call Mitchell County home, then we hope you can take part in some of our amazing assesets right here at home.

Day 1: Arrival & Scenic Exploration
Begin your trip in Spruce Pine, where you can now refer to it as, your basecamp to the Blue Ridge.
Spend your morning exploring the double decker main street—browse local shops, grab a coffee, and get a feel for the community. In the afternoon, take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, one of the most iconic scenic routes in the country. While parts of it is close, we think the BEST part of the entire Parkway is OPEN.
What part is that? The stretch from the Orchard at Altapass to the Parkway Resort Town of Little Switzerland. Switzerland Inn will be a great spot to grab dinner in a relxed, but elevated atmosphere. We suggest chasing the sunset there and watching it go down while relaxing at their stone firepit.
Day 2: Arts & the Appalachian Trail
Start your day early—it’s worth it.
Brew your coffee before sunrise and make your way toward Roan Mountain to catch first light over the peaks. It’s an early wake-up call, but the views are unforgettable and set the tone for the day ahead.
Once you come down the mountain, head into Bakersville and refuel at Mammie’s Breakfast Barn. A true local favorite, it’s the perfect place to settle in and enjoy a classic mountain breakfast—we recommend the biscuits and gravy.
From there, spend your late morning exploring the galleries along North Mitchell Avenue. Stop into Mica Gallery and InTandem Gallery to experience the creativity that defines this community.
If timing allows, treat yourself to something sweet at Roan View Mercantile—an ice cream in hand is never a bad idea on a spring afternoon. Before heading back to your home base, make one final stop at Penland School of Craft. Visit the gallery, explore the campus, and consider taking home a handcrafted piece—a meaningful reminder of your time in Mitchell County.

Day 3: High Country Road Trip
Today is all about the journey.
Hit the road and experience the beauty of the High Country along the Mayland Meander, a scenic 120-mile drive that winds through Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties, connecting a collection of small mountain towns and unforgettable landscapes.
This thoughtfully designed route invites you to slow down and explore—passing through places like Bakersville, Little Switzerland, and beyond—each offering its own unique charm, local flavor, and scenic beauty. Along the way, you’ll find opportunities to stop for short hikes, browse local shops, discover galleries, and take in sweeping mountain views. Portions of the drive connect with the Blue Ridge Parkway, adding even more iconic overlooks to your day.
There’s no right or wrong way to experience the Meander—follow the map, take the detours, and stop often. This is where the High Country reveals itself best!
